Judit and Akos were there too, they had arrived last night.

Before we could eat there was the Hungarian tradition that needed to be followed first. The tradition at Easter is for the boys to "sprinkle" the girls with wwater or perfume in order for them to bloom and become real flowers. Jancsi takes this very seriously and uses a soda water spray can. Luckily for me, not having slept over at the house saved me from waking up to a bunch of soda water in my face.

After saying their verses, Akos and Jancsi sprayed Ili, Judit and me. It was not that bad, except for the cold water that was sprayed on me.

We ate breakfast and then headed over to Ili's sister and mothers house. We got some more perfume in our hair.

This was followed once again with Marci's arrival. All in all, I think I had 4 or 5 different perfumes sprayed on my head, along with the water on my clothing.

As I was getting ready to head home, Ili's neighbour came over and asked if we wanted to head to the brand new bath complex in Nyirbator. It was really a nice place, not too big, and I was really happy to see the actual swimming pool. I did around 80 laps. It made me feel so nice, just going back and forth doing the strokes I haven't done in nearly a year. I was also happy that my hair no longer smelled of different perfumes after going into the pool.

I finally made it home at 8. It was a long day, but nice to spend with my favourite Hungarians doing a variety of things.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-21062276381224810042010-04-03T19:50:00.004+02:002010-04-03T20:06:02.943+02:00Easter a la Magyar, Part 1Today, I spent a large portion of my time helping Ili and Jancsi make things for Easter. It was nice, I got to get a lot of fresh vegetables and spend time out in the fresh air. After shopping in the Spar, Ili and I were waiting in line to pay, when the man in front of us tried to use a 10,000 Ft bill. The cashier looked at it and something was wrong. She spent a long time looking at it and talking to the cashier beside her. There was a policeman standing in line behind me, and so after spending nearly 10 minutes looking at it, she turns and asks him what she should do. He tells her he will call the police to come and see what is up.

We didn't spend that much time there after we had paid, but I thought it was funny that there was a policeman just standing there trying to buy his own groceries.

In the afternoon I got some acceptances for Teachers College at home. My sister and I should be going to the same place, so next year will really be different.

That is it for now.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-31744352736126853712010-03-31T13:36:00.003+02:002010-03-31T13:40:49.654+02:00Peanut Butter ChipsWhen I came back from summer break, I brought many types of chocolate chips with me. I have been trying to figure out how to use the peanut butter ones in a new way for a while. Being on Easter Break, while almost everyone else is still in school, I have a lot of spare time on my hands. I was able to attend our school ceremony this year, so I did get a feel for the day. It was a nice ceremony, lots of poems, songs and acting.

I went to Krakow again, this time with a Hungarian group. I was really looking forward to being back in Krakow because I loved being there for Easter last year. This year, it really just wasn't the same. The weather was either rainy or snowy and freezing cold. Jamie wasn't with me, and I was with a bunch of people who didn;t try talking to me because they though I didn't know any Hungarian. Joke is on them because I understood most of what they were saying, especially when it was about me. The time sitting on a bus is what really got to me. We left at 6am on Saturday and spent the next 10.5 hours driving. Sunday, luckily we got a break from sitting on the bus. Monday, I dreaded the most. We had to drive back to Auschwitz, the opposite direction of our way home, drive back close to the city and then start the way home. All in all, we were probably sitting on the bus for 14 or 15 hours. It was crazy, I don't want to sit on a bus again.

This week it really started settling in that I only have 3 more months here. I can't imagine leaving and going back to life at home. I will miss everyone here, but most of all, my 2a kids. I don't know what I will do when I won't be going into school everyday and seeing them.

I know this seems like a sad post, but hopefully after this weekends langos and palacsinta party, it will be a much happier blog.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-32957988961355723622010-03-06T13:12:00.002+01:002010-03-06T14:00:50.789+01:00Weekly horoscopeViva has a show that assigns a music video to each sign of the zodiac. This was really something. He was riding a horse, and talking on his phone.

I don't know why it was so weird to see this, but I guess I just don't associate riding a horse and talking on a cell with each other.

I wasn't the only one who found it weird. Everyone else waiting for the bus watched too, with confused looks on their face.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-70005444673739035282010-03-01T21:59:00.002+01:002010-03-01T22:15:57.582+01:00Canada is Golden<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 271px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcEgbvAYCBlslQyC26kwtDtRgzS7kuMOYEO4Q6FjMrUYP_vv_H0-5S2Mc8EIh_iNXaNSuN32doBYPfd-fvYm3QvqyMXgoYOhtUajU9_HxjYbN4vi5t59KABzi5jUXLacQuacxuRT-0rv4Q/s320/vancouver.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443777175654451122" />

The past couple weeks, I was really grateful to have my TV with cable. They had to write down 3 words that began with a, 3 for b, etc. While I was correcting them, I noticed some very interesting words that the kids had put down. One had written dividi, for DVD. The oddest one that I saw must have been artichoke. Zsofia had spelled it correctly. It really took me by surprise because we have never mentioned artichoke in class.

When I asked Zsofi where she found the word, she said it was in a book she had. I was really impressed by this. Many kids who speak English as their first language would not be able to spell artichoke when they are 8, yet Zsofia could do it. I keep thinking about it, and I am looking forward to see what she can come up with next.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-68749764975979671392010-01-12T16:24:00.002+01:002010-01-12T16:42:16.881+01:00The holidaysIt has been a long time since I posted anything. I am not really sure why.

The holidays can be summed up in 2 words for me

delays
food

My way to Denmark took much longer than expected. Europe isn't really used to getting much snow from what I have seen and the train and plane rides were no exception. My first train was more than 2 hours late going from Nyiregyhaza to Budapest. I can promise you it was so much "fun", something you never want to happen.

I arrived, drank and went to sleep after 2, needing to leave at 8 to head to the airport. I made it, but my plane was still an hour late. More fun times. In an crowded airport just waiting. My next train, from Copenhagen to Aarhus was also late, this time almost an hour. But, I finally made it.

The second part. Food. I honestly didn't know what to expect. My sister had been warning me that they eat a lot around Christmas so I should be ready to eat.

It started with a rice dish on Dec. 23. It was really good, much better than rice pudding, even though I was told I wasn't eating it correctly.

Dec 24, two big meals. Too much food, with a break for church in the middle. On the bright side, I have now been to a Lutheran church.

Dec 25th, when things really got serious. I was told that the meal was going to be smaller that year. It was only 9 courses, yes 9. That was smaller. The year before it was 11 or 13, depending on who you asked. It had been 18 courses at one point. I am not sure how you could eat that much food, though it is interspersed with breaks. It is just so much food.

New years eve was not as many courses, though there was still plenty of food.

It was nice being outside at midnight watching everyone, literally everyone setting of their own fireworks along the streets. We watched for nearly 30 mins before heading back inside. The fireworks continues the rest of that night and into the next couple days.

There were no major delays in getting back home, I was very thankful for that, leaving at 1am to catch the train back to Copenhagen. I was just happy by the time I made it to my own bed so I could pretty much just pass out until morning.

It was good to be with my sister for Christmas and really experience a Danish Christmas.

So that, in a nutshell, was my vacation.

I am now looking forward to my school ball and Farsang. I have been told the tetative dates, and they are both supposed to fall when my sister and her fiance are here. Should be an interesting experience for them.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-73248984935864281682009-12-05T22:41:00.004+01:002009-12-05T22:56:01.164+01:00The past weekMikulas Nap,
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3IZhrdPPu0gDWBnQ4u6cY5xvZEFRml0rpZrMqgqjm0T1wK9QigkhrNgdFNywjpOWAnZnk5qFwT39_sdu2RXoSXHlKv_YnTQH2feRAtJ2E54KFR130193qPHS7l2gM9z9Zj1vTXFtcE8Zj/s320/mikulas+nap+040.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411873544807302818" />
Some of 1a douring their performance. IIAbout a month ago we had a night where the parents could come in and talk to us about their kids. Sanyi decided it was a good idea and scheduled one again. We sat through an hour of him talking about different things for all the kids, not eating lunches, snacks, messing around in the school and so on. I wasn't really paying attention, but then I heard my name. I don't really know exactly what he said, but Ili told me it was something like, "Tara has some teaching techniques I have never seen before, but they seem to be working because the kids are still learning." I am sure there was more to it than that, but I guess I will never know.

We spoke to both classes about the kids, spending more time with 2a. Dezi's and Zsofia's mothers are still trying to convince me to stay longer. I said maybe.

I now have to start on my Farsang costume, I just hope it works out how I have planned it in my head.

Wednesday I leave for Serbia. Fanni said nothing, she just put them into her desk. All morning, Mark kept looking over at Fanni, I was just waiting for something to happen.

I came back to the class after they had a concert and Mark was really upset. He wouldn't say what was wrong. I had drawn a dragon in his memory book and hoped that would make him happy, but no.

We went outside for a little bit and Kata and Ili were talking about Mark. They said that he likes Fanni and that she did something to him. Ili had a word for it in Hungarian, but did not know how to translate it.

I felt bad for him. He has become a better student, but I guess there was always going to be the day when his heart was broken. He still has lots of time though, he is only 7.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-57096195521224680592009-11-12T21:03:00.002+01:002009-11-12T21:07:44.532+01:00Memory booksMy 1a and 2a kids have been bringing in books all week and asking me to draw in them. I can't count how many fairies and princesses I have drawn in the past week alone, but it has been fun.

I really like the idea, because it is a way to keep track of their classmates throughout the year, even though they don't usually change.

I will bring in a book of my own starting next week and ask all of them to draw and write something so that I will remember them.

I am going to miss them so much when I leave, but the memories will be wonderful!Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-31822162893273477792009-11-11T23:52:00.000+01:002009-11-11T23:53:35.844+01:00Remembrance DayIt is Remembrance Day. Here is a poem for you to enjoy

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I got the kids to make poppies. It was an interesting thing to watch them try and cut out the parts, but in the end, it worked out.

Ili also gave me a bottle of hand disinfectant and said, "this is for Serbia."

For some reason, I could not stop laughing.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-15792942837593553452009-11-10T20:21:00.002+01:002009-11-10T20:27:46.832+01:00Terrible Tuesday...Today, I finally realized that my neighbours moved out. Yes, it took me three days to notice that I no longer have anyone living right beside me. I was a little concerned with where Palacsinta was, not being within the gates for the last few days. I was walking by their house and noticed that it was empty. I had no idea they were leaving.

I am sad that I now no longer have my pets, Palacsinta or Borszokany, but I do like the fact that I will no longer have to hear chanting at any time during the day.

The other thing that happened today was when I was on my way to school. I went to look at the clock and saw that there was no power. This, was not really surprising, as you may know from my last experience with having no power a few weeks ago. It only got worse as I got to school and found out that there was no power there either. It wasn't expected to be back on until 4:30 either. Boo.

It is really not much fun trying to teach in a dark classroom, or venturing in to the windowless storage room to get things for the kids during PE.

I only hope that they have fulfilled their power outage quota for the next 8 months. I really enjoy using lights and heating especially when it is so dark out!Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-74353337086132827382009-11-06T13:11:00.003+01:002009-11-06T13:15:07.730+01:00Letters to SantaMy 2a kids were starting to write their letters to Santa yesterday. It may seem a little early, but, here, Santa comes on December 6th. A few of them showed me, a few of them kept it secret.

What made me smile was when they started talking about writing letters to Jesus, the one who brings presents on December 25th. They had no problems about writing the letters, but questioned how they would get them to him. A couple of the suggestions were to thrown them up in the air until they didn't fall down and the other, to put them on a plane that would fly to Jesus.

I don't think they have come up with a final solution, but there is still time.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-614266089095224013.post-87896081137157380992009-11-04T22:05:00.002+01:002009-11-04T22:15:03.878+01:00Everyday randomnessThis week meant back to school.

Monday, I was "lucky" enough to go with the upper classes to Nyiregyhaza and see a show. I was told that my lacking a grasp on Hungarian would not be a problem was not a problem, it would be mostly dance.

The description of the show was about a boy trying to find his ideal girl, but having a lot of problems on the way. I am pretty sure that in the end he married a robot. The show was full of crazy dancing, music and people dancing in their underwear. Honestly, I was in shock for most of the performance.

Tuesday, Ili gave me a book that used to be hers. It is from a long time ago. It is also in Russian. My goal for the new future is to learn at least a few of the letters of the Russian alphabet. I would then be able to pronounce some things, even though I would not know what on earth I am saying.

I started teaching one of my girls, Blanka, mother today. She took English in college and has a really good grasp. She just wants to practice and make sure about things in the different tenses.

I also thought about doing a short version of snow white with 2a for Farsang. I need to either find a script that would be appropriate for 7 and 8 year olds with a bit of English, or write my own.

I also am starting to plan my trip to Serbia! Yay, it is 3 weeks away from now, but I am starting to count down the days. I haven't left Hungary in a while, so I am really looking forward to heading off!

The week is half done!Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475589136854983416noreply@blogger.com4
